Short Bio

Dr. Speth is a public health veterinarian with a passion for solving problems at the human-animal health interface. Following graduation from Michigan State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, she served as a Public Health Officer in the U.S. Air Force, managing public health programs for a large military installation. She then transferred to the Air Force Reserve to pursue a full-time career as a public practice veterinarian. She also holds a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Minnesota and is board certified in veterinary preventive medicine. Dr. Speth has over 17 years of experience in the Federal government with a focus on livestock and public health policy, including international trade, disease control, and public health preparedness. Dr. Speth is currently the emerging diseases coordinator for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Veterinary Services. In this role she guides national strategy and policy related to emerging diseases of livestock. Her interests include fostering one health approaches to infectious disease, international livestock health capacity building, and emergency response.
