Short Bio
Isabel L. Maurício is Assistant Professor in Medical Parasitology at the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Universidade Nova de Lisboa (IHMT/UNL), since 2010. She has a degree in Biology from the University of Lisbon, Faculty of Sciences and a PhD in the field of “Molecular Diversity of Leishmania” from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), University of London.
She is a researcher and professor in Medical Helminthology and Parasitology and Coordinator of the PhD in Human Genetics and Infectious Diseases at IHMT/UNL, also having experience in supervising, teaching and coordinating courses at LSHTM.
At LSHTM, his research activities focused primarily on leishmaniasis, specializing in topics related to genetic diversity and recombination. He developed molecular typing methods for Leishmania and conducted phylogenetic and population genetic studies.
Since 2010, at IHMT, his work has expanded to include helminths, primarily nematodes and trematodes. He currently works in molecular epidemiology, particularly of helminths and Leishmania, their life cycles and recombination, and isothermal amplification methods for helminth diagnosis.
She has participated, including as co-coordinator, in several research projects in these areas and has supervised several postgraduate students (PhD and Master's). She is also interested in gender issues and led a project for a network of Portuguese-speaking women scientists in African countries.
Isabel Maurício is the author of 43 peer-reviewed articles and three book chapters.
