Short Bio
I'm Charity Wiafe Akenten, hailing from Kumasi, Ghana. Currently, I serve as a Biomedical Scientist/microbiologist at the Kumasi Center for Collaborative Research. my passion lies in exploring the resistance mechanisms of bacteria within antimicrobial resistance surveillance.
My role extends beyond research; I actively contribute to AMR surveillance implementation at my workplace. With extensive expertise in phenotypic and genotypic identification of bacteria and their antibiotic resistance, I mentor and train new laboratory scientists, having supported lab personnel at various institutions in Ghana and Tanzania. I've played a pivotal role in establishing three AMR surveillance centers in Ghana.
My ultimate aim is to play a crucial part in combating the rising tide of AMR by educating the youth about responsible antibiotic usage and its risks. Collaboration is key, and I'm dedicated to partnering with stakeholders in this fight. With experience spanning since 2014, my expertise includes bacterial identification, antibiotic susceptibility profiles, and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), including real-time and conventional methods. Additionally, I've recently acquired training in Next Generation Sequencing and its analysis, broadening my skill set in this evolving field.
