Short Bio
Dr. Carla Mavian is an evolutionary virologist interested in the ecology of (re)emerging of climate amplified pathogens, adapted to humans or with a zoonotic potential. She has worked a wide range of pathogens, from bacteria like Vibrio cholerae to viruses such poxviruses, HIV, Zika, dengue, SARS-CoV-2. She discovered the emergence of a recombinant Mayaro virus strain and spread from the Amazon into non-endemic Haiti, and of new zoonotic coronavirus in humans in Haiti from independent spillover events that underscore the ability of coronaviruses to spillover to humans, adapt and potentially lead to human-to-human transmission. Her research investigates the evolutionary history and the population dynamics of emerging zoonotic and human pathogens aiming at the identification of the drivers for population growth, spatial dispersal, spillover into livestock-domestic animals, and human populations. Her research embodies the One Health approach by focusing on host, pathogen, environment, and enables deeper understanding emergence and transmission of zoonotic pathogens in hotspots and ecosystems threatened by climate and land-use change.
